Women in the House and Senate

In 2010, Women In the Senate and House (WISH List) and Republican Majority for Choice (RM4C), longtime strategic partners, joined forces. Through the WISH List Project, RMC works to promote the work of pro-choice Republican women in Congress.

Women are the majority in this country, yet female legislators only account for 16% of the 535 seats in the 112th Congress. Advocacy programs such as the WISH Stars Program, the WISH List project recognize and support Republican women – highlighting their work on Capitol Hill.

Today mainstream Republican women remain vigilant in the fight to protect reproductive health choices from extremists on both sides of the aisle aiming to claim the issue as their own. The WISH List project actively supports and collaborates with mainstream Republican women to propel them to office.

Senator Olympia Snowe (Maine)

Although we are sad to lose pro-choice champion Senator Olympia Snowe (R-ME) who is retiring from the U.S. Senate, her departure does not diminish her influence. Earlier this summer Senator Snowe announced her efforts with the Maine Community Foundation to establish the Olympia Snowe Women’s Leadership Institute. The Institute will focus on increasing civic engagement among today’s youth and encouraging young women to hold leadership roles in public office.

Post election, Senator Snowe plans to launch a Political Action Committee aimed at bringing together members of Congress alongside candidates who are interested in building consensus on legislative issues.

Serving in the U.S. Senate since 1995, Senator Snowe is a long-time ally of the RMC and her strong leadership will be sorely missed. Senator Snowe is one of the leading examples of a Republican woman in Congress who embodies political independence and stands up for real Republican principles. Her input into the political conversation in Washington, DC has been invaluable over the course of her 35 years in office.

The WISH List project salutes Senator Olympia Snowe for her commitment to the fundamental Republican principles of limited government, fiscal restraint and individual liberty.
